GREEN RATING SYSTEM FOR CITIES
When considering Sri Lankan cities, most of the cities are already
struggling with environmental degradation, traffic congestion, inadequate urban infrastructure, and a lack of basic services. Maintaining economic growth, while creating sustainable livable cities for all, is the biggest urban challenge facing today. Sustainable city concept is a broader concept which integrates social development, economic development and environmental
management. Sustainable Development Goals which were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 also addressing sustainable city concept by their eleventh goal, stated as' Sustainable cities and communities' with the objective of to make cities inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. There are several national sustainable development programs planned for Sri Lank and in there, the sustainable city concept plays a major role. Therefore, actions should be taken to incorporate sustainable city concepts to Sri Lankan attributes by developing policies, projects, awareness programs, educational programs and funding facilities.
